A follow-up of sort to "Sura", "Enceladus" is another evolution for Hecq: his pristine dubstep gets enriched here with even more encompassing soundscapes and humane melodies. Collaborating with Skyence on the title track, Hecq has given birth to a very coherent record mixing cinematic atmospheres, huge percussions and a light nod to retro tonalities. Add to this a mischievous crunk remix by Knight Riderz and a dancefloor explosion by Mobthrow, and you get a compact yet exhaustive snapshot of Hecq's unmissable talent.
A year and a half after "Sura", Hecq returns to Ad Noiseam with a new record. Like its predecessor, "Enceladus" is a way for this artist to showcase a side of its talent which hadn't been exposed yet. For most people, "Sura" was Hecq's first adventure in dubstep, following a career built primarily on glitchy electronica and atmospheres. If this new Hecq sound, harder, bassier and more club-oriented was confirmed on his recent "Avenger" album, "Enceladus" takes yet another direction. This time around, Hecq slows things down a bit and taps into retro synthesis to combine the sharpness and drive of his "Sura"-type tracks with a somewhat more humane and melodic feeling. This evolution is clear with the title track, co-written with Hecq's new Skyence collaborator, and underlined by the playful crunk of Knight Riderz's remix.
On the flip side, "Instaheat" creeps slowly forwards before unfolding into a metronomic and hypnotizing track. Here again, Hecq's extreme care for the details and acute sense for build-ups result in something enthralling and deep. The remix of this track, signed by Hecq's label-mate Mobthrow, takes everybody by surprise and tolerates no prisoner. After having shared the stage with Hecq, Mobthrow decided to up the ante in a massive manner, turning "Instaheat" into a massive monster of dynamic beats and huge drops which closes the record in an explosive demonstration of music-craftsmanship and club-appeal.
Following up on Hecq's first steps in heavy basses and beats, "Enceladus" is a crowning achievement for Hecq, as it shows how this musician can present tunes that carry at the same time the weight and drive of his dubstep material and a more playful and accessible side. Not as cold as a distant moon of Saturn, though as mysterious and awe-inspiring, here is another adventure for an act which has become an essential name for any fan of underground electronic music.
