Press Release
2methyl's first full length album is both a feast for the dancefloor and an example of creativity. Following the "Orb" EP, "Layer 8" is a hard, fast album of futuristic dark drum'n'bass. But it is also an example of how to bring this genre forward while staying true to its energy. Very complex and detailed, the nine tracks of this album play with the rules of modern day's drum'n'bass and burst out of their restraints, resulting in an album whose horizon is beyond the dancefloor and which impresses by its magnitude and originality.
A year and a half after the "Orb" EP, 2methyl (previously known as 2methylbulbe1ol) returns to Ad Noiseam to reveal his first full length album. "Layer 8": the title stems from the tech industry where it describes the human endpoint of a technology, something which fits perfectly with the way Nicolas Druoton twists the rules of every genre he touches, perfecting its sound but turning it into something new.
Following several slower and more electronica influenced EP (including the noticeable "Golem" and its collaborations with Hecq and Mobthrow), 2methyl had increased the pace at the same time as shortened his project name, delivering with "Orb" a remarkable piece of futuristic drum'n'bass. Praised and rejoined by scene stalwarts such as The Sect or Current Value, he quickly felt at home with this new faster and harder, as demonstrated with his first album.
2methyl sets the mood from the very beginning of "Highway": "Layer 8" is a dark, complex, very detailed journey, something accurately put into images by Okiko's somber cybernetic artwork. The sound is crisp, great care is given to details, everything falls into place naturally, from the (very) hard beats of "Resilience" to the calmer respite of "Shelter". But 2methyl's music does not only stand out for its complexity and richness. It is also something which always bends the rules it pretends to follow. This is no regular drum'n'bass, no classic hardcore or crossbreed: the tempos are too changing, the beats are morphing too often. We are taken down a path which we think is familiar, only to end up in a place which is new, unexpected and more satisfying that we thought.
2methyl is an illusionist with a perfectly controlled set of tools. On this album, he shows that rather than using them as intended, he creates something we didn't expect. The 8th layer is not only controlling the lower ones, it is also improving the machine in truly innovative ways.
