One single rule directed the production of this set of thirteen tracks and nebulo's first release on Stomoxine records: no other source was to be used than those found in audio cassettes.
The album defies aesthetics and styles, oscillating between magic juju, pre-Columbian catacombs speleology, feral polyrhythms, Orient-Occident romance and humour-terrorism.

artistic advancement combined with a logical stylistic continuation is an important aspect of nebulo's work, and the follow up to the 'cardiac' release makes no exception to thomas pujols' working method. what started as a plain concept for an ep, resulted in something way more complex: the full length album 'castles', expanded with the digital ep 'basements'.
on both releases the usage of beat-driven structures is present, but the clear emphasis of nebulo's new works lies in the addition of a new set of sound aesthetics developed during the last two years. 'castles' offers an intensified amount of repetitive patterns based on dark technoid textures, accumulated with polyrhythmic adjustments, unusual harmonic breaks and strengthened analog / digital synthesis. the atmospheres transferred by these sounds range from dreamy and mesmerizing to abruptly irritating and even menacingly forceful - as strong, solid and contorted as castles are intended to be.
like a sonic architect, nebulo successfully explores new territories and strikes a new path, where 'basements' can be allegorized as the foundation of 'castles'. oftenly, ambitions and dreams about building something impossible result in illusive castles in the sky - with this release nebulo has certainly proven that the 'castles' you are about to listen to became reality.

after thomas pujols a.k.a. nebulo received numerous requests by other artists to remix his tracks, he launched a collective public remix session of the track 'redkosh' off the album 'cardiac'. from the 25 remixes he received, the best five were chosen to appear on this release along with the original album version. 'redkosh' was transformed by vndl, shape2, druc drac, sonic area and syndrôm in their very own and unique way - complex electronica between abstraction and harmony, adding new facets to nebulo's artistic self-conception. this is a free release - enjoy!

After completing his last album 'artefact' thomas pujols felt the need to change nebulo's aural focus towards immediacy and beat-underlaid directness. in the summer of 2011 he recorded one draft track every day to substantiate his ideas and inspirations, and he used these drafts as resources for this release. to prevent the feeling of electronic coldness and to achieve an more organic texture unusual production devices like a 4-track recorder were used. each drum sample was chosen with extraordinary diligence, e.g. the clap sounds were entirely self-recorded on various locations. 'cardiac' is a diligently produced aural state of mind lying in the realm of experimental electronica - a delicate balance between fragility and gravity, ambience and rhythms. the ten tracks are built around abstract melodies, complex textures and warm synth tones, driven by expertly crafted and varied beat patterns, layered with sweeping modulated waves, glitches and noises.

this album is a musical interpretation of the graphic novel 'la fièvre d'urbicande', the second part of the award-winning 'les cités obscures' series by by belgian artists françois schuiten and benoît peeters.. to bring this project to fruition, nebulo and druc drac explored various modes of composition to illustrate the rich universe portrayed in the novel's pages, using the exquisite corpse technique (rive nord - rive sud), transposing the narrative to be in accord with the chronological sequence of events found in both the general storyline (urbicande) and specific chapters within the work (les jardins suspendus, le réseau), mathematical composition relating to the evolution of the «network» (polynome), and finally freely inspiring themselves, drinking deep from the world created in the story (brigades urbatecturales, hexaèdre, micromega and sunurb).
the sonic breadth of this release births a hybrid between acousmatic / electro-acoustic music, electronica, ambient and darker industrial. 'the fever of urbicande' was the inspiration for a wide range of clicks and cuts, haunting sound collages, fragile melodies, acoustic piano excursions, powerful synth chords and even impulsive beat sequences reminiscent of experimental technoid pioneers like pan sonic. intricately constructed but also far from any academic sobriety, its cold, distant and captivating feel makes 'urbatectures' an ideal imaginary soundtrack for the mind's projector, and of course a great accompaniment for viewing schuiten's and peeters' works.

avutma is the latest release by nebulo after the album kolia, two remixes for architect and hecq, and even freely available nebulo ringtones. the outstanding french artist thomas p. with this cd has created a closed opus that might be seen as a concept album in which the listener has to decide what the concept is.
nebulo's subtle approach forms a complex fictitious scenery by using seemingly minimal resources that are more visible than ever. electronically treated instruments like organ and piano, combined with synth layers and modified beats generate tempers that range from surreal to melancholic or even nearly frightening. listening to 'avutma' is like walking in a dimly lit basement never knowing what's behind the next curve, and who or what is actually casting these shadows on the walls...
nebulo's trademark, a connection between ambience, idm, clicks'n'cuts and post-musique-concrète collages is presented here once again. as a reviewer wrote: "surreal dreamscapes painted with tears and sometimes even blood" - avutma might be the soundtrack of today's grand guignol.

biographical note: french composer thomas p. (age 25) started as a visual artist. he studied at two art schools and as a visual artist he sees himself more as a 'graphic illustrator' than as a painter. now he has decided to work seriously as a musician. his attendance of electro acoustic composition courses at the bordeaux conservatoire radically changed his musical point of view. of course he knew of artists such as the aphex twin but the classes introduced him to the academic world of musical avant-gardism. prior to these classed he would have called this music 'just noise'. thomas received his degree in 2005 when he completed his composition, 'mecalangue'. however, he has to finish two more compositions to finally get his diploma. music is also his daytime job as he works for a sound design agency. he creates sounds for different types of media (such as radio, software or web pages). eventually he hopes to be able to compose film soundtracks - especially since his interests are still in visual arts. thomas's early musical influences range from erik satie and beethoven to serge gainsbourg and the beatles. when he was 18, he discovered aphex twin, amon tobin and squarepusher - which turned him on to electronic music. at the age of 19 he started to make own music with a 4-track recorder and later with a computer. as an open-minded listener he also likes other styles - from post-rock to triphop to breakcore. his interests in movies and literature are, as he describes it 'a dark aesthetic': david lynch, david cronenberg, stanley kubrick, h.p. lovecraft, william s. burroughs, e.a. poe, franz kafka and more.
working as a musician, thomas sees himself more as a 'composer' than as a 'performer'. his aim is to create music that elicits strong feelings and makes the listener's mind travel inside imaginary landscapes. on the other hand, he wants to keep his music outside the academic ivory tower - so he uses beats or memorable melodies within his compositions. listening to nebulo should be like experiencing a story - that is, both sweet, melancholic and violent....
