Venetian Snares - Traditional Synthesizer Music

Press Release
Traditional Synthesizer Music is a collection of songs created and performed live exclusively on the modular synthesizer by Aaron Funk. Each sound contained within was created purely with the modular synthesizer. No overdubbing or editing techniques were utilized in the recordings on Traditional Synthesizer Music. Each song was approached from the ground up and dismantled upon the completion of it's recording. The goal was to develop songs with interchangeable structures and sub structures, yet musically pleasing motifs. Many techniques were incorporated to "humanize" or vary the rhythmic results within these sub structures. An exercise in constructing surprises, patches interrupting each other to create unforeseen progressions. Multiple takes were recorded for each song resulting in vastly different versions of each piece.

We played Venetian Snares' new EP 'Your Face' to three septugenarians:
P: "I'd like to say when it started off I liked it very much indeed. And then it goes into this music which seems.. 'disjointed' I felt, and then the sort of interruptive noises came in. And that bothered me."
F: "More or less the same. I found the beginning very good. Very restful and I enjoyed it. When the beating started, with the rhythm, then is when.. it's beyond my comprehension. And there must be some merit in doing that sort of thing, but I can't understand it."
P: "I couldn't imagine dancing to that, or even 'moving' to it in a way, so I find it disturbing, yes. You hear some lovely music, I feel, underneath it all. You're just beginning to enjoy that and then you get this top lot coming over, which is interrupting and disturbing it, you know, and you think 'I want to hear more of the other' because that sounds as if it's good."
E: "Well that was interesting. It's something I could listen to, which is something I can't always do with techno, but erm, what I don't like is anything with banging beats in the background, that's just me. But the actual different sounds are interesting I think. It's Just that I didn't like things that go thud, thud, thud. Yes, it's quite.. for me it's not excruciating."
F: "The beats were more rhythmic in this one, so they were not so disturbing. I understand a little bit what was going on, but I enjoyed the background music."
E: "Again, this one's a bit too sort of thudding for my taste, but the actual tune of it, yes, that's interesting. Not something I would 'choose' to listen to. It's too heavy, the drumming stuff, whatever it is, the bass. ...

With 'My Love Is A Bulldozer', Venetian Snares first new album since 2010's 'My So-Called Life', Aaron Funk surprises yet again, drawing on new ideas and on moods that have only been touched upon in his previous work.
The album seems to have a flowing sense of narrative, something akin to an opera, and unusually Aaron sings songs on it, which reinforces the sense of an emotional journey. Sonically he meshes together sometimes thunderous yet complex drum programming with delicate musical structures, creating, in places, a sense of haunted, atmospheric Jazziness, as well as spiky autumnal strings recalling the gothic orchestral beauty of his previous work.
Right from the start it's clear we're in new territory, with the distressed and violent '10th Circle Of Winnipeg', featuring a world weary jazz singer intoning deep emotional loss between crashing breaks and a corkscrewing bassline, giving us a sense of bewilderment and hurt, whereas 'Deleted Poems', all mournful strings and flamenco guitar, evokes empty desolation. '1000 Years' is the first time we hear Aaron's romantic singing with its orchestral accompaniment, coming across with a slightly medieval quality, cut up dramatically with angry fitful drum programming. On 'Your Smiling Face' Aaron's voice is both lamenting and slightly manic over an empty downbeat drums and piano, switching quickly in mood to the cartoony rush of 'Amazon'.
Title track 'My Love Is A Bulldozer' is as close as Snares gets to a pop song, with its gothic, self-deprecating vocals and dark synth melodies, but this is quickly splintered apart by rushing drumwork and metal stabs leaving you breathless. 'She Runs' sees things get warmer and more romantic, with epic chords and building, fidgety drums, rushing closer and closer in anticipation towards the end as if they're speeding towards a destination. 'Too Far Across', drops back to sparse, lonely lyrics, the vocals yearning to see a distant love...

One of these tracks is about my 2 friends. I really love them, they are good people and really great friends. After I recorded the track, I had a vision that they became the same entity, like some kind of human spider hybrid, which I really didn't like as I don't think of them like that at all. The tune is not about that whatsoever but I kept thinking about that for a good 2 or 3 days. It was chilling. See if you can guess which song it is! Another, I wrote using only tweeters so it was hard to make out anything other than hi-hats. Still, it sounds much better than most music that has been recorded. See if you can guess which one it is! There is a track that mainly uses analog devices to control digital devices. It seems laughable that most people want to control their analog synths with midi, imposing their ridiculous choice of notes on the music. They are pretty much rapists. I have enabled these devices to communicate in a mutually respectful, consensual embrace. See if you can guess which track is 100% free of blatant narcissism! The final tune is a ramp, an inclined plane, or a crescendo of sorts in music, stretched out over a number of minutes. It's like a pyramid wall made from every thought you've ever thought of becoming immeasurably more discernible, yet built upon a river of everything you've tried to forget. The river is grey and all thoughts you've ever had are all other colors but mainly maroon and silver. See if you recognize your thoughts in this one!

On this EP Venetian Snares significantly breaks the mould with four tracks that he calls 'Cubist Reggae'. As a descriptor, it's apt, as these are basic loops and ideas taken from reggae but bent into strange angular sounds.
'Ever Apparent All Being Shoulder' cuts and chops an upbeat reggae rhythm into dramatic shapes, from which tentacled effects and melodies evolve, whilst all the time a sinister voice whispers dark intentions.
'Where You Stopped The Heaviest' brings downcast, shimmering orchestral chords over cavernous dub spaces, which are occasionally fractured with violent effects or sad melodies.
'The Identification Circles Levitate' starts by folding down a reggae melody into ever decreasing sharp shards, while a foggy melody builds over the top, the track then develops a burst of rave energy, before it closes down with the melody again.
'You Discovered The Secret And Juiced It For All It's Majesty' consumes the reggae and just leaves the cubes behind. Whats left of the loops are turned into rhythm, as drums are chopped up into neurotic dissonant patterns, dissolving into space before firing off at angles, as a seasick melody keeps the track centred.
